People hear “concrete” and think of something permanent. Once it’s set, sure — it’s a rock. But before it’s set, concrete is the most perishable item on your job site. More perishable than the donuts the supplier sent with the truck.
I tell every customer the same thing: we’re basically bakers. You have to know the sun, you have to know the wind, you have to know how the slump looked when it rolled off the chute. Get any of those wrong and the pour is compromised before the float ever touches it.
The clock starts the second it’s mixed
Most ready-mix concrete has a working window of about 90 minutes from the time water hits the cement. That’s assuming it’s a reasonable temperature out, the load isn’t sitting in the sun, and the truck isn’t idling for an hour because the crew isn’t ready.
Push past that window and you start losing what we call slump — the workability of the mix. The water starts evaporating, the cement starts setting up in the truck, and what comes out is stiff, hard to finish, and won’t bond properly to itself. Even if you can muscle it into place, the finished pour is already weaker than it should be.
I’ve been on jobs where the wall wasn’t set up but the contractor already had a truck on site. What do you think happens to concrete sitting in a truck for an hour? Nothing good. By the time the wall is ready, the concrete is too far gone. Either you pour it anyway and you’ve got a bad slab, or you send the truck back and you’re out the load.
Sun and wind change everything
Cleveland gets a lot of perfect concrete weather — overcast, calm, mid-60s, light humidity. That’s the sweet spot. The slab cures slow and even, you have plenty of time to finish, and nothing fights you.
Then there are the bad days. Hot sun in July, dry wind off the lake, low humidity. On a day like that, the top of your slab starts drying out before the bottom has even started to set up. That mismatch is what causes the next problem in this series — wind checking — but it also causes plaster cracks, weak surfaces, and finishes that scale off in a year.
The fix isn’t magic. It’s scheduling. On a bad weather day, you pour early morning or late afternoon. You wet the subgrade ahead of time. You use evaporation retarders. You don’t let the truck sit. You have enough hands on site to finish faster than the sun can dry it.
That’s the kind of judgment that comes from doing this for decades. A guy who bought a finishing trowel last Tuesday is going to pour at 1pm on a 90-degree day and lose the pour. I won’t.
What to ask before you hire
If you’re getting estimates, ask one question: “What time of day are you planning to pour, and what’s your plan if the weather changes?” A contractor who’s been doing this a long time will have a real answer — they’ll talk about morning vs. afternoon, what the forecast looks like, whether they need a bigger crew, evaporation retarder, all of it.
A contractor who shrugs and says “whenever the truck shows up” is the guy whose driveway you’ll be replacing in three years.
