Control Joints, Random Cracks, and Lightning Bolts

Concrete cracks. That’s not a defect — it’s physics. The question is whether it cracks where you choose or where it wants to.

Every homeowner I’ve worked with has, at some point, asked me some version of the same question: “Will it crack?” And every single time, my answer is the same: yes. Concrete cracks. The question isn’t whether — it’s where, and whether you can control it.

Why concrete cracks

Concrete shrinks as it cures. The water in the mix evaporates, the cement bonds, and the slab gets smaller — not by much, but enough. At the same time the slab is subjected to temperature changes, ground movement, and loads from above. All of that creates internal stress.

Concrete handles compression fine. It doesn’t handle tension well. As soon as the internal tension exceeds the tensile strength of the slab, it cracks. There is no concrete mix on Earth that prevents this. The only thing you can do is decide where the cracks happen.

That’s what control joints are

A control joint is a deliberate weak point in the slab. You saw it in (or tool it in while wet) about a quarter the depth of the slab. When the slab eventually cracks — and it will — it cracks in the bottom of that groove, where you put it, where you wanted it. Not across the middle of your patio in a wandering line.

The best analogy is a piece of paper. If you take a piece of paper and just try to tear it, you get a random jagged tear. But if you fold it first and crease the fold a few times, the paper tears along the crease — straight, where you wanted. Same principle. The control joint is the crease.

What happens when joints are missing or wrong

When a contractor skips joints, or spaces them too far apart, or doesn’t cut them deep enough, you get what we call lightning bolts. Random cracks that tear across the slab in ugly, jagged lines. They’re not your contractor’s opinion of where the crack should be — they’re the slab telling you where it had to release the tension.

Lightning bolts are almost always preventable. The general rule of thumb is that you cut joints in panels no bigger than 8 feet in any direction for a typical 4-inch slab. For driveways and patios that’s usually a grid pattern, with the saw cuts going both ways. Skip a cut, or stretch the panels to 10 or 12 feet, and you’re betting the slab will cooperate. It won’t.

When to cut joints

Timing matters too. Cut too early and the saw blade tears the green concrete. Cut too late and the slab has already cracked on its own — your saw cut is just decoration. The window is usually within 4–12 hours of the finish, depending on the weather and mix. A good contractor knows this and shows up at the right time.

I cut a lot of joints for other contractors who don’t want to mess with it themselves — they call me to come out and saw cut their driveways and slabs at the right window. It’s a specialty service. I bring my own saw and do it right.

What about “control joints that go random”?

Sometimes you’ll see a slab where the contractor cut joints but the crack still went somewhere else — like, the crack jumped past the joint and tore the slab anyway. Three reasons that happens:

  • The joint wasn’t deep enough.A control joint needs to be at least 1/4 of the slab depth. So for a 4-inch slab, that’s a full inch deep. Shallower joints don’t weaken the slab enough.
  • The joints were too far apart. Going past 8 feet means the slab might rather crack in the middle than wait for the joint.
  • Subgrade movement. If the ground under the slab settles or heaves unevenly, the slab will crack where the ground forced it to, not where you wanted it. This is usually about prep — proper compaction, drainage, sub-base thickness.

The takeaway

When you’re getting a concrete estimate, ask your contractor about joints. Where will they go? How deep will they be? When will they be cut? If the answer is vague or non-existent, you’re looking at lightning bolts in 18 months. If the contractor walks you through a grid pattern, tells you he’ll cut within a 4–12 hour window, and shows you the depth he’ll cut to, you’ve got someone who knows what they’re doing.
